Major supermarket to start price war at pumps by slashing cost of petrol and diesel

A PRICE war is kicking off at filling stations around the country.

Petrol and diesel will be 4p a litre cheaper at Asda when its forecourts open today.

And there are hopes fuel prices will drop further on the back of falling oil prices, in a welcome break for families who are facing soaring water, energy and council tax bills next month.

The price cut by Asda is a major gear-change for the troubled supermarket following the return of Allan Leighton as executive chairman in November.

Industry experts believe rival supermarkets will rush to match its offer.

Mr Leighton said: “At Asda, it’s in our DNA to give hard-working customers the best value we can.”

Last year, MPs accused the supermarket of ripping off drivers by boosting its fuel profits.

Asda says it will cut the price of petrol to an average of 131.9p a litre and diesel to 137p.

The Sun’s Keep It Down campaign has kept fuel duty frozen for over a decade.

Meanwhile the RAC said last night that if retailers passed on the full savings from falling oil prices, pump prices should drop by 6p a litre for petrol and 3p for diesel.
