But the proposed deal has fallen through after the two clubs failed to reach an agreement over his loan fee or the terms of a buy option, according to the Daily Mail.
Malacia, 25, expected to be leaving Old Trafford so said his goodbyes to his team-mates.
He could still leave the club on a temporary basis however with Celtic and Real Betis understood to be amongst the clubs interested in the Dutchman.
Ruben Amorim is happy to let Malacia leave after signing another left-back, Patrick Dorgu.
Malacia has featured just eight times since Amorim was hired, with only three of those matches coming in the Prem.
He missed the entirety of the 2023-24 campaign through injury and only returned to action in November.
Malacia could follow Marcus Rashford out of the door with the forward closing in on a loan move to Aston Villa.
Rashford underwent a medical after agreeing terms which will see him continue to earn £325,000-a-week as United will cover 25 per cent of his wages.

Villa also have the option to buy the England forward at the end of the season for around £40million.
